Donna Summer’s sole holiday record, Christmas Spirit, is getting a vinyl reissue for the first time in 30 years. The album’s 10 tracks include Summer’s renditions of traditional carols like “White Christmas” and “O Holy Night” as well as a cover of Amy Grant’s “Breath of Heaven.” Also featured are three original tracks by the Queen of Disco, “Christmas Is Here,” “Christmas Spirit,” and “Lamb of God.” Christmas Spirit is available now on a standard black LP vinyl pressing and ships in October.
Christmas Spirit was originally released on October 4, 1994 via PolyGram and Mercury Records. The album was produced by Michael Omartian, who had previously worked with Summer on 1983’s She Works Hard for the Money and 1984’s Cars Without Claws.
Earlier this year, Summer’s “I Feel Love” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Concurrently, Summer was posthumously honored with a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award alongside Laurie Anderson, the Clark Sisters, Gladys Knight, N.W.A., and Tammy Wynette.
In March, the late Summer shared a new EP titled Any Way At All. Released in accordance with International Women’s Day, the EP includes includes “Any Way At All,” a medley of “Dim All The Lights,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” and “Last Dance,” and a Masters at Work 86th Street Radio Edit of “I Feel Love.” That same month saw the release of a new EP featuring four remixes of the 1983 hit “She Works Hard for the Money” by DJ John Michael Peloton.
In 2023, Summer’s daughter, Brooklyn Sudano and the Oscar-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams co-directed a documentary about the performer, titled Love To Love You, Donna Summer. Sudano reflected on her mother’s legacy around the release of the film, saying “I think for me it was really understanding just how intense her stardom felt to her and how much of a struggle balancing that with motherhood and identity….The amount of appreciation, the amount of grace, the amount of respect that I have for her is bananas now, and it goes beyond.”
